Our Practice
A practice founded on patience and professional care
Songkran Law was established to offer Bangkok families a calm, considered alternative to the transactional approach that can characterise larger firms.

The Songkran Law story
Songkran Law came into being through a straightforward observation: families navigating inheritance questions in Thailand often found themselves dealing with law firms where estate matters were handled briskly, with little room for the kind of careful conversation that these situations call for.
The practice was founded in Bangkok's Lumpini district to address that gap. The name draws on the spirit of the Songkran water festival — a time of transition, renewal, and thoughtful attention to what is being passed from one generation to the next. That spirit shapes the way we approach every engagement.
Our team works exclusively in the field of succession and inheritance law. This focus allows us to maintain a depth of knowledge that a general practice, by nature, cannot. We understand the Thai Civil and Commercial Code's succession provisions in detail, and we stay current with the court interpretations and procedural developments that affect how cases are conducted.
We work with Thai nationals and expatriates alike, and with families whose estates span national borders. Many of our clients come to us at a difficult time — after a bereavement, or when a family disagreement over an estate has begun to feel unresolvable. We work to bring order and clarity to these situations, without adding pressure.

Inheritance law in Thailand — what families need to know
Thai succession law is governed primarily by Books V and VI of the Civil and Commercial Code. These provisions set out the order of statutory heirs, the requirements for a valid will, the process by which courts appoint estate administrators, and the circumstances in which an heir may be deprived of their inheritance. For families unfamiliar with these rules, the process can feel unclear, particularly when a death occurs unexpectedly or a dispute arises among heirs.
Songkran Law has spent more than a decade assisting families through this framework. Our work spans straightforward estate planning conversations — where a client simply wishes to set out their wishes in an orderly way — through to complex litigation before the Thai civil courts, involving disputed wills, allegations of undue influence, or contested distributions among multiple heirs.
The Bangkok courts have jurisdiction over estate matters where the deceased was domiciled in Thailand, or where Thai-sited assets form part of the estate. For clients whose assets or family members span national borders, additional legal questions arise — touching on recognition of foreign wills, cross-border asset transfers, and the legal status of heirs under different national laws. These cross-border matters require careful coordination and a clear understanding of how Thai law intersects with the relevant foreign jurisdictions.
At Songkran Law, we approach each matter from the perspective of what the family actually needs, rather than what the procedural minimum requires. That means spending time at the outset to understand the family's wishes, the composition of the estate, and the relationships involved before advising on the most appropriate path forward.
